Kingscourt Reading - Core
A complete guided reading programme.

I feel that the Kingscourt Reading books are of a very high quality, and will definitely give our SEN children great pleasure reading them, as well as providing them with enough repetition to promote learning.

St Patricks Primary School

Kingscourt Reading has beautifully presented bright and interesting pupil books covering a variety of styles and genres including non-fiction.

The teacher friendly guide completes a well-structured scheme with built in Benchmark Assessment.

Knowetop Primary School, North Lanarkshire

We use Kingscourt Reading, Literacy Links Plus and Wildcats in school. We have used Kingscourt / McGraw-Hill resources for five years.

The resources are linked very well to the National Literacy Strategy and have solved a lot of problems when first setting up and then building up the resources gradually.
We feel absolutely that Kingscourt / McGraw-Hill understand our needs. Our local representative is excellent. They keep us up to date with all the new literacy development, meeting with our Literacy Consultant for all the latest news. The materials and resources are tailored to the demands of the National Literacy Strategy and all the new initiatives. This makes my job much easier.

We value the service of our local rep, the range of materials and the features of the materials, the quick and easy ordering and delivery, and the teacher support.

What’s good about the set... by Child Education

  • The Kingscourt Reading (Core) guided reading books are up to the normal high standard of Kingscourt materials and are extremely attractive to look at and handle. Many of them have novelty cut-outs which have been linked to the storyline and this really adds to the books’ appeal.
  • The teacher’s guide to each level is incredibly detailed and yet simple to use. There are full instructions on how to take a group of children through a guided reading session - almost a mini lesson plan. Also included are a range of follow-up suggestions.
  • The supports and challenges that may be considered in each book are listed along with features to note any high frequency words. This is very useful for busy teachers working with several guided reading groups each and every week.
  • The texts are written in an easy-to-understand and meaningful way with everybody language that children can relate to. The writing is clear, easy to follow, and printed in a variety of different sizes and fonts. Different illustrator styles reflect children from different ethnic backgrounds and good photographs accompany the non-fiction texts. These Kingscourt Reading guided reading books are a pleasure to use and are much enjoyed by children.

Child Education

A new early intervention series to support pupils who need a wealth of varied (nice to see plays at this level) and stimulating little books to enchance their literacy development. The series has 20 levels of carefully graduated steps, with a handy-sized Teacher’s Guide for each level. The vocabulary is controlled but not to the extent of detracting from the storylines.

The National Literacy Association

Book Band Pink to Purple

Children love the bright coloured pictures and techers love the range of texts in each level.

The teachers books are particularly useful for the teaching assistants.

We like the way they naturally progress into the Year 2,3, and 4 core reading books.

Book Band Lime – Magenta

The Year 3 and 4 and 5 core reading books - friends and friendship, wild and wonderful, challenges and choices are excellent and by far the best resource in the series.

The teachers books (Questioning the Text) are excellent - with the key questions for each section of pages make guided reading easy and stress free for teachers and teaching assistants.

We strongly believe that our excellent Year 4 reading SATS results last year were partly due to these books.

The boys particularly liked the black and white books such as nightmare and midnight rescue.

The follow up writing activities are also useful to use and children enjoyed these once they have read the books.

A fantastic resource which teachers and children are enjoying using from Reception through to Year 4 - well worth the money!!
Mrs Burgess, Gothic Meade Lower School , Arlesey

Book Band levels 1-14

I purchased this resource because I was very impressed with the many types of genre available. There is excellent illustration and content that would be of high interest to all children especially boys. I like the variety of genres and the shape of the books.

I use this resource for whole class teaching, groups and for homework. The books are levelled according to Reading Recovery levels, which suits us well. We will be very happy to share with other schools our knowledge and success with the scheme.are enjoying using from Reception through to Year 4 - well worth the money!!
Mrs Donashy – St Mary’s Primary School, N.Ireland

We purchased this resource because the school required a Guided Reading system. Books looked varied, well structured, levelled and came with follow-up activities. We like the fact that setting up the entire range was easy, and the books include fiction and non-fiction. They are structured well for all readers to use a variety of strategies. The early learners are keen to read as books are repetitive and have great illustrations/photos and target ideas that interest them.

We use this resource with groups – ability-grouped Guided Reading sessions with teachers or teaching assistants, from foundation level to Year 6. All our literacy objectives are met – based on the literacy framework. The school target is to accelerate reading progress – improvements have already been seen after 6 months. We have seen success through ability gains where children have moved level.
Paula Bevilacqua – The Stonebridge School , London

All base staff love these books and have trialed them with various age groups and suggested parents share a book together. We have taken these out with us on school visits and they have been very well received. Beautiful illustrations, clear text and different presentation styles are some of the comments teachers have made.
