Recent developments across children?s services in education, health and social welfare have reinforced the value that government and service providers place on this basic human right. Listening to Young Children is a comprehensive resource, which: * Supports practitioners' and parents' understanding of what it means to include the voices of young children and to respond to what young children have to say * Enables practitioners and parents to develop and offer young children real opportunities to express their views of experiences and events in their daily lives * Promotes children?s participation in decision-making and problem-solving processes about matters that concern them * Acknowledges the existing strengths of families and communities by building on their capacity to participate actively. The pack consists of five parts: Getting Started - the introductory guide; Promoting Listening to Young Children - the reader; Listening and Looking - the practitioner handbook; Eleven shared experiences - individual case study booklets; and a CD-ROM with audiovisual material to illustrate the case studies. Each part complements the others through links, offering stepping-stones by addressing why, when and how to listen to young children. This integrated resource is suitable for a diverse range of settings ? at home, in playgroups, nurseries or early years centres, in child-minding settings, schools, parent and family centres, Sure Start initiatives, supervised contact centres, homeless centres, asylum/refugee centres, and centres for children with disabilities or special needs. |

Vanessa Broadbent MSc is the Childcare Regeneration Officer for Leeds and is the development officer of the Listening to Young Children Project. She has worked in the area of childcare and education for over 15 years. She has contributed to research and development on promoting children?s learning from birth to five years, family literacy and early intervention programmes. |
