[REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION]
Rebecca L Brown, M.D.(University of Chicago)
**Description**
This book provides a thorough review of major topics in endocrinology. It encompasses many "bread and butter" aspects of the field including pituitary, thyroid, and bone diseases as well as diabetes, obesity and endocrine tumors.
In addition, reproductive endocrinology is addressed.
**Purpose**
The books purpose is to bring information to readers in a "compact and usable form" compared to its mother book ("Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine"). This is indeed a worthy objective. This book allows for more detail on endocrine disease. Its focus allows for integration of pathophysiology, clinical presentation and general treatment options. The book met the authors' objective.
**Audience**
This book is an excellent overview of endocrine disease for the student, resident or fellow with a particular interest in Endocrinology. It is also suitable for the general internist who would like to hone his/her knowledge in Endocrinology. The author writes that the book is written for both students of medicine and practicing physicians. In my opinion, this is an appropriate audience. The author and contributors are credible authorities on the book.
**Features**
All major topics in Endocrinology are covered in the book. There are three excellent features to this book. First, it is far more readable than many review books. The illustrations are well done and add to the written text.
Second, after the description of different endocrine diseases, the authors provide a blue-box with up-to-date overviews of treatment for the particular disease. Third, for those who would like to read more, each section has current references for studies/articles that have influenced the understanding/treatment of the topic.
**Assessment**
I think this is an excellent book. It is useful as a reference book (to look up a specific question) or as a review (to hone one's knowledge in Endocrinology).
The chapters are concise and readable. The references provided are current.
There is also a self-assessment Q&A section. I have not read any earlier editions.
